Study habits are extremely important to help you in your academic life. If you are an avid learner, you will definitely know the importance of good study habits. Good study habits will not only help you perform better academically but also boost your confidence.
Here are some of the most important tips that will help you in improving your study habits:
1. Use your five senses to learn new information.
When you read or listen to a lecture, make sure you use all of your senses to learn the information. For example, if you are listening to a lecture, look at the PowerPoint slides that accompany the lecture and take notes on them.
Or if you are reading an article or book chapter, watch the video clips or videos that accompany it and make notes on them. If you are reading a textbook chapter, watch the accompanying video clips and take notes on them. And so on and so forth…
2. Take good notes during lectures and read over them before going to sleep at night.
After each class, write down key points in your notebook or laptop computer while they are still fresh in your mind. As soon as possible after class (but before doing anything else), read over what you have written down during class.
Either out loud or silently—and then put your notebook away for a while before reviewing it again later in the day (or evening).
3. If taking detailed notes is not feasible, write down key points on index cards as soon as possible after class (before doing anything else).
Then place these index cards around your room or apartment where they will be visible and easily accessible when studying later in the day (or evening). For example, place them on top of your computer monitor; above your desk; next to the phone; near where you do most of your studying; etc… And then review these index cards when studying later in the day (or evening).
4. Create study groups with classmates who are interested in learning from each other’s strengths.
One of my professors once told me that people learn more from teaching others than they do from being taught by others! Also, make sure that all students have equal time speaking so that everyone can participate equally in this learning process!
It also helps if there is some sort of reward system involved…like “The person who receives the most points from his/her classmates gets a free dinner at Olive Garden!” 🙂
Also remember: You get out what you put into something! So be willing to put forth an honest effort into these study groups!
In summary
The purpose of this chapter was to share with you some tips for becoming a better learner. And while these tips are by no means comprehensive, they are good starting points for improving your learning skills. So what are you waiting for? It’s time to put these tips into action!
