What Is Microlearning And Why You Should Care

If you’re not familiar with the term, microlearning is short, quick training on a specific topic. Instead of spending hours learning a whole new skill or system, microlearning gives you the information you need to start.

Microlearning works because it provides information in digestible chunks. If you were going to sit down and watch a 2-hour video, you would likely lose interest before the end.

But if we break up that same information into short clips, it would be much easier to follow along and retain the information. According to Human Capital Institute, we now have shorter attention spans than goldfish (just 8 seconds).

This is because life bombards us with stimuli all day long through email, text messages and other technology. Because of this increased amount of information overload, we are less likely to sit down and read an entire blog post or watch an entire video – we need something more concise and more targeted.

How Microlearning Improves Our Learning Progress

Microlearning allows us to consume content quickly while still learning what we need to know at a deeper level than what we can accomplish in short spurts of time throughout the day. Microlearning also helps learners retain the information they learn much better than traditional training methods.

Because learners can review each module as many times as they need to in order to master the material, they are able to retain the information longer. Microlearning also allows learners to progress at their own pace, so they can learn when it’s convenient for them instead of when we schedule the training.

The good news is that microlearning is much easier to implement than you might think. While it does require some extra planning and strategy, it’s still a great way to deliver information in bite-sized chunks.

We can use microlearning for almost any kind of training or development, including sales training, product training. new hire orientation, safety training, and more!
