5 Brain Foods To Help You During Exams

While it is true that you will need to take care of your body and mind during exam time, there are a few brain foods that you can eat which will boost your brainpower.

#1 Chocolate

Did you know that chocolate contains phenylethylamine? This chemical boosts serotonin levels in the brain, which helps to fight depression and improve mood. This in turn improves your focus and concentration levels.

#2 Bananas

Bananas are rich in potassium, magnesium and tryptophan, all of which help the brain function at its best. Magnesium is especially important as it has been found to have a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to prevent stress-related anxiety attacks. Tryptophan also works as a mood enhancer and sleep aid. Bananas are great for an afternoon snack when you feel tired during an exam.

#3 Peanut Butter & Jam Sandwich

The sandwich above is a great brain food because it contains high amounts of tryptophan (in the peanut butter) and phenylalanine (in the jam). The combo works together to give you that feeling of happiness while improving your concentration levels. While these two chemicals do not directly boost memory or alertness.

They do help prevent drowsiness while making you feel more awake and cheerful! The sandwich also contains complex carbohydrates which help stabilize blood sugar levels, keeping your energy levels high throughout the day. You can even make these sandwiches ahead of time so that they’re ready when you need them!

#4 Turkey Sandwich

Turkey is an excellent source of tryptophan and the complex carbohydrates in the bread help to stabilize blood sugar levels. The veggies provide you with a good dose of vitamins and minerals, helping to improve your overall health.

The combo is also rich in vitamin B6, which helps to prevent brain fog. While this sandwich does not contain phenylalanine, it will still give you that happy feeling that will help keep you focused during exams!

#5 Almonds & Raisins

The almonds are rich in phenylalanine and potassium while the raisins are high in sugar (fructose). These two work together to improve your memory while boosting your mood.

You can eat these two separately or combine them together for a great snack!
