The food that you eat during recess in school affects your grades, your performance in sports, and your ability to concentrate. It also affects your mood and your behavior.

Your mood is affected by the food you eat. When you eat junk food, you feel sluggish and tired. You don’t have the energy to do well in school or play sports. When you eat healthy foods, you feel alert and energetic.

You have the energy to do well in school or play sports. Your behavior is affected by the food you eat. When you eat junk food, you become cranky and irritable.

You get into fights with other kids at recess or on the playground. When you eat healthy foods, you are happy and friendly with other kids at recess or on the playground.

It’s important to remember that it’s not just what we put into our bodies that affects our health; it’s also what we put into our minds that affects our health as well as our ability to learn and perform well in school and sports activities.

If you want to be healthy, eat healthy foods. If you want to be smart, eat smart foods.

Nutrients for a healthy diet

A healthy diet is one that provides the body with the nutrients it needs to function properly. A nutrient is a substance that is essential to the growth, development, and maintenance of the body.

There are six major nutrients: carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are the body’s main source of energy. You may find carbohydrates in breads, cereals, pasta, rice, fruits, vegetables, and milk.

Proteins

Proteins are important for growth and repair of body tissues. You may find proteins in meat (beef and pork), poultry (chicken and turkey), fish (salmon and tuna), eggs (chicken eggs), cheese (cottage cheese), beans (kidney beans), nuts (peanuts), seeds (sunflower seeds), milk products (yogurt), and some grains (millet).

Fats

Fats provide energy for the body as well as help protect internal organs. Also fats help maintain healthy skin and hair.

You may find fats in butter or margarine; vegetable oils such as corn oil; salad dressings; nuts; peanut butter; dairy products such as milk or ice cream; chocolate; mayonnaise; meats such as beef or pork fatback or bacon fat; poultry such as chicken skin or chicken fat; fish such as salmon skin or salmon fat; and eggs.

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic substances that are necessary for the body to function properly. They are found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and milk products.

Minerals

Minerals are inorganic substances that are necessary for the body to function properly. They are found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and milk products.

Water

Water is necessary for all body functions. It helps regulate body temperature and remove waste products from the body. Water is found in all foods but is especially abundant in fruits and vegetables.
