Tuition Agency Consultation

If you are thinking of joining a tuition agency, here are some questions to ask before signing on the dotted line.

1.What is your background?

A Tuition Agency will help you find a tutor, but what if you don’t like them? What if they don’t like you?

A good agency will offer flexibility and they should be able to match your needs with the tutor that best suits you.

If an agency tells you that they only have one tutor available for a subject, then think twice about signing up with them.

This can be very frustrating when things do not work out and students need to find another tutor at short notice.

2. What services do you offer?

A good agency will be able to offer a range of services and flexibility. A good agency will have a lot of tutors on their books and should be able to match your needs with the tutor that best suits you.

They should also be able to recommend a suitable tutor if they don’t have one available for your subject.

3. Do you have insurance?

Many tutors will not want to join an agency unless they are insured. The reason for this is that they are responsible for your child’s safety.

Meanwhile they are at home with the child. It is therefore very important that they are covered in case anything goes wrong.

If an agency tells you that their tutors are not insured. Then look elsewhere as this is something you will want to be sure about before allowing someone into your home.

It is also worth checking if the tutor has insurance cover on their car, as accidents can happen when picking up or dropping off students from school.

If the tutor does not have any form of insurance then it would be worth speaking to the parents of children who attend their classes.

As many schools require proof of public liability insurance when children are picked up from school or travel with them on field trips or excursions.

4. What qualifications do your tutors have?

Are they qualified teachers? What subjects do they teach?

How long have they been teaching?

Where did they study?

What grades did they get in those subjects?

How long have they been teaching for?

Are any of them working towards gaining Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)?

How many years experience do the tutors in each subject area have?

5. What is your reputation like in the community?

If you have been to a Tuition Agency Open Evening, then it is likely that you will have met other parents who have used them before. It is worth speaking to them and asking what their experience was like with the agency.

This can be a good way of getting a real feel for the agency as a whole, and how they operate in general. It is also worth asking other parents what they think of the tutors who work for that particular agency.

It can be very useful to get a second opinion from people who know nothing about the tutors themselves, but only know about their work with their children.

This can give you an idea of how good they are at teaching and how easy they are to get along with.

6. Do you offer insurance? Are there any fees associated with this?

Are there any restrictions on the cover I am receiving (i.e., “Cover excludes…”)?

Does this cover me when I travel with my child (e.g., school trips or sports events)?

If my child falls ill during a lesson will it cover them going to hospital or does it just cover “any expenses incurred while returning home from school”?

Does this include cancellation charges or is there an excess payable in addition to these costs? Does this include transport costs in addition to personal injury or illness costs.

7. Do you have a money back guarantee?

This is a great way to make sure that you are happy with the service that you receive from your Tuition Agency.

Most agencies will offer a money back guarantee if they are not able to find you a suitable tutor for your child.

It is worth asking about this before signing up, as it can be very frustrating if you join an agency and then find out that they cannot help you find a tutor for your child.

A good agency will always offer some form of money back guarantee and should be able to refund the fees that you have paid them in full, providing there is no time limit or restriction on how long ago the fees were paid.

These are just some of the questions that parents should ask before joining a Tuition Agency.

If they cannot answer all of these questions, then it might be worth looking elsewhere as this will give you peace of mind and ensure that your child’s safety is looked after.
