8 Common Gamification Mistakes To Avoid

Gamification is a proven way to engage users and encourage behavior change. If you’re going to incorporate gamification into your app, you need to understand the right way to use it. Here are 8 common mistakes that designers make when designing games and apps.

1. Don’t Use Your Logo

It’s not that we think you should have a boring logo, but in the case of gamification, it is a bit overdone. It is a great way to get your brand name out there, but the problem is that it may be the only thing people remember about your company.

Your product is the one they are going to purchase, not your logo.

2. Don’t Make It Boring

The purpose of gamification is to get people interested in what you have to offer and keep them engaged with your brand. If you go too far with your “game”, people will start getting bored and you will lose their interest fast.

Just remember that the point of gamification is to make things fun, not boring!

3. Don’t Over-Gamify Everything You Do

One way to turn off customers and clients is by over-gamifying everything you do. Remember that you don’t want your brand or product associated with just one activity or game; it should be about more than just the game itself!

Make sure you are creating engagement outside of the game as well so customers can have fun without the game.

4. Don’t Let Gamification Override Your Product

We have already mentioned that gamification is a great way to get your brand name out there, but it shouldn’t be the only thing you are known for. If you create a product that is really good, but your only focus is on gamification, then people may think your product isn’t that great after all.

This is a huge mistake to make when using gamification.

5. Don’t Forget The Larger Goal

When it comes to gamification, there are usually goals involved with each activity or game you have created. You want to keep these goals in mind as you design the game or activity and make sure they are achievable and not too hard to complete.

If they are too hard, people will lose interest and not complete them at all!

6. Don’t Create a Gamified Product That Is Not Fun!

If you use gamification as an excuse to make something fun boring, then you have made a huge mistake! You want people engaged with your brand and products, so make sure that each activity or game is actually fun for them!

It is the best way to ensure that they continue to engage with your brand.

7. Don’t Use Gamification For Everything

Just because you can gamify something doesn’t mean you should. In fact, there are some things that are just better left alone! When you gamify something, you want to make sure it fits with your brand and is fun for people to do.

If it doesn’t fit with your brand or is not fun, then you have made a mistake by gamifying it!

8. Don’t Expect To Win The Game Every Time

If people know they are going to win every time they play a game, then they will lose interest fast! When it comes to gamification, you want people playing and enjoying themselves so that they will continue to engage with your brand.

If they feel like the game is too easy or boring, then they will lose interest quickly and never come back!
