How is the school year structure in India?

The structure of the academic calendar and the curriculum are laid down by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Each school year consists of two terms: summer and winter.

The government reimburses private schools on the basis that 75% of the staff are permanent and 15% temporary. Although in practice many schools have a higher proportion of temporary staff.

It is common for students in private schools to take exams from the state board. This presents their transcripts to state universities as proof of having passed.

However, most private colleges are affiliated with national institutions. Such as the University of Delhi and assume that their graduates have taken the examinations with these bodies.

These colleges typically require students to pass all 10 subjects in order to get a degree. Under CBSE regulations, this just has required for science or commerce students but not for those taking arts degrees.

Is it true that India has more English-language schools than the UK?

Yes, research by the British Council shows that there are more secondary schools with an English medium of instruction in India than in the UK.

This is partly because of the huge demand for overseas education. Especially, It has driven up numbers in areas.

Such as Bangalore and Hyderabad, where some private schools have English-only entry requirements.

Some families also prefer to remain within an English-medium system for longer.

However, there is a significant proportion of international students from non-Anglophone countries. This mean the don't use English at all when they join a school.

This is perhaps the best way to explain the grading system in India. It is important to know that India does not use letter grade. Unlike other countries and that there are no “A” grades.

For an example, reading the grade below you would understand that 90% means the student has understood 90% of the expected grades and performed well overall.

Again, there are no letter grades or “A” grades in India. Rather they are split into 3 categories, 1 being the lowest, 3 being highest.

Grades

1-3 (Fail)

The student has not met the benchmark requirements for a particular subject and needs to make improvements in future assignments before moving on to another grade level without any credits.

Students in this category can retake the class in another institution or summer school program.

4-6 (Pass)

The student is on the right track to move forward to the next grade level. There may be areas that need improvement.

However, they are not as significant and cannot take away from a student’s excellent performance in other areas of study.

Students who score between 4-6 should work hard on their weaker subjects before moving forward to a higher grade level.

They may also consider taking these subjects in summer school where they can focus on them and improve their grades before moving onto another grade level and subject area.

7-10 (Credit)

This score means that student has achieved enough mastery over a particular subject area to be able to move onto the next grade level. They are well on their way to high school graduation.

Students in this category should continue to meet benchmark requirements and do well in their weaker subjects if they wish to move onto higher grade levels and earn more credits.

11-13 (High Pass)

These students are taking the top of their class! They have demonstrated excellence over a given subject area and have achieved a high grade point average overall, earning them grades that fall into this range.

Students in this category should continue to do well, focus on areas of interest within their studies.

They could take additional classes at summer school or other institutions and enroll in programs that can help them pursue further careers such as university or college.

There are many options available for students who show such impressive skills in academic performance.

14-16 (Ace)

This category of student is very impressive and has demonstrated an understanding of a subject area and education that is outstanding when compared to other students.

They are on the fast track to high school graduation and may choose to focus on subjects that interest them or take additional classes at summer school or other institutions.

Students in this category should continue to take an active role in academics by participating in extra-curricular activities, studying abroad, taking advanced level classes, research projects, leadership opportunities and programs for the gifted student.

With a good record of performance up until now there are many options available for students who perform as well as these!

17+ (Perfect)

This top scoring student has performed even better than the previous category of student and has demonstrated that they are at the top of their class.

Students in this category should continue to take an active role in academics by participating in extra-curricular activities, studying abroad, taking advanced level classes, research projects, leadership opportunities and programs for the gifted student.

With a good record of performance up until now there are many options available for students who perform as well as these!
