Am I pushing my child too far?

It’s not uncommon for parents to ask if they are pushing their child too far in one area or another.

The truth is, there is no such thing as pushing a child too far. There are just areas where your child may need more help, encouragement, and practice than others.

You know your child best and can decide if you think she needs more support in one area or another. Just keep in mind that there is no magic number of times a child should practice a skill.

What I want you to know is that if your child has some difficulties with a skill, it’s not the end of the world. He will learn it. It may take longer than you expect, but it will happen.

If you are concerned about pushing your child too far, ask yourself these questions:

Does my child seem to be enjoying this activity? Is she interested in doing more? Is she having fun? If the answer is yes, then she’s not being pushed too far.

Does my child have enough opportunities to practice and learn this skill?

For example, if your child struggles with handwriting and gets only 15 minutes of handwriting practice per week at school.

Then you may need to provide additional opportunities for him to practice writing at home.

If your child struggles with addition and subtraction facts and gets only 5 minutes of math drill per day at school, then you may need to provide additional drill time at home or help her with flash cards before bedtime.

If your child struggles with reading comprehension and only reads 20 minutes per day at school.

Then you may need to read aloud with her for an additional 10-15 minutes each night or give her extra reading assignments in other subjects like science or social studies.

There are no hard and fast rules here; just make sure your child has enough opportunities to practice his skills in different contexts so he can learn what he needs to know.

In conclusion…

You are not pushing your child too far if you give him the opportunity to practice a skill and learn it. Your child will learn what he needs to know. Don’t worry about it!
