How to Develop Your Child’s English Language Skill

If you want to know how to develop your child’s English language skill, the first thing you should do is to find out what he/she already knows.

If you are the parent of a non-English speaking child, this will be quite easy. Because they will only know their native language. If you are the parent of an English-speaking child, then you will have to conduct an assessment of their language skills.

When assessing your child’s language skills, don’t just rely on your observation because it might not be accurate. You should also ask him/her questions and take note of the answers. By doing this, you will be able to determine if there are some areas that need improvement.

Once you have identified what needs improvement, then it is time for you to help your child learn those areas that need improvement. To do this, find out what activities he/she enjoys doing and then involve him/her in those activities so that he/she can practice his/her English skills while having fun at the same time. Here are some suggestions:

  • Take him/her on field trips with other children his age who speak English as their native language or use it regularly so that he can practice his listening and speaking skills with them;
  • Find a teacher who speaks his native language and who is willing to teach him English at home;
  • Get involved in reading activities such as story-telling sessions or just reading books together;
  • Watch television programs together with subtitles in his native language so that he can improve his understanding of English words;
