How to prepare for PSLE Listening Comprehension Examination

Comprehension exams are generally regarded as one of the hardest and most stressful examinations in secondary school. For a very few students, it is an absolute requirement for their tertiary education and career.

The listening comprehension exam is often regarded as the most difficult type of exam to prepare for, because there are only one or two short passages to read, and you will have to listen carefully.

In this article, we will provide some tips on how to do well on this comprehension examinations.

1. Listen to the recording several times.

This is an important step, as it helps you to understand the content of the recording and get used to the speed of speaking.

A correct answer to a listening comprehension exam can only be based on listening to the recording, because there are no other sources of information such as textbook, glossary or notes.

2. Read the transcript.

This will help you get familiar with the questions and their answers. You should be able to understand most of what is said in each section.

Read the question paper carefully before the exam, so that you are able to pick out the main points. You will find it helpful to highlight or underline the important words.

3. Listen again.

This time concentrating on the questions and answers only, without looking at the transcript or listening to the recording for help.

Do not worry if you do not understand everything first time round, but try to grasp as much as possible from each question and answer pair in order to obtain a clearer picture of what is being said in each section.

4. Review all four sections once more.

Making sure that you have understood everything clearly by yourself without any help from a transcript or recording before going on to Step 5 (see below).

Careless mistake is often made by students. For example, they might fail to make the distinction between questions and statements, or read the wrong question paper section.

5. Take your time answering each question.

Take short breaks between sections if necessary, or else you may find yourself becoming tired easily and losing concentration when trying to answer some of the more difficult questions at the end of each section!

A comprehension paper is a series of questions and answers. You must listen carefully to the passage and answer the questions which follow it.

6. When you have finished, check your answers with the answers given in the transcript and recording.

If you are still unsure about some of the questions, listen to the recording again and read the transcript again. You may also wish to consult a friend or classmate who has also taken this examination.

A perfect score in this type of examination will depend on your ability to understand the main ideas and arguments of the reading passage, and to answer the questions. Therefore, it is important that you understand what is being said in the passages, and be able to recall and explain it.

Conclusion

In conclusion, a good way to prepare for the Listening Comprehension Examination is to practice listening to the recording, reading the transcript and taking notes. You should then be able to understand most of what is said in each section.

In this way, you will be able to achieve a good score in this examination and improve your listening skills as well!
