How To Teach Your Children Respect

If you are a parent, one of the most important things you can do is to teach your children respect. In fact, many experts would argue that respect is the foundation of all positive human relationships.

It’s the glue that holds us together as a community. It’s what keeps our families intact and our friendships strong.

So, how do we teach respect? Here are a few tips:

Demonstrate Respect To Your Children

One of the best ways to teach your children to respect others is to treat others with respect yourself.

Show them by example how to behave in different situations, and how to be respectful towards others regardless of their age or station in life.

Teach Your Children To Respect Others

As you go about your day-to-day life, point out people who deserve respect—teachers, police officers, nurses, and other community members. This will explain why they deserve this type of treatment from others.

Teach Your Children To Respect Property

When it comes to respecting property, make sure your children understand that this applies not only to physical property (such as their toys), but also intellectual property (such as music).

Explain Why Respect Is Important

There’s no reason why kids need to know about social order or class structure at an early age;

Instead, help them understand why it’s important for everyone in society to be treated with courtesy and consideration.

When dealing with parents, you should be pointedly polite, and when speaking with your friends and siblings, you should be pointedly respectful.

Correct Your Child When They Are Disrespectful

Finally, make sure you correct your child when they show disrespect towards someone else.

Not only it will reinforce what you have been teaching them thus far, but it will also serve as a reminder that disrespect isn’t tolerated in your household!
