Putting the Finishing Touches on Your Child’s Primary 1 Preparation

To make primary 1 preparation work for your child, here are the steps you need to take.

How to help your child choose the right primary school

Every year, more than 300,000 Primary 1 pupils start their first day of school. This is a big step for both the child and the parents. You have to prepare your child for primary school, so that he or she can take this next step in his or her life without any fear.

Getting your child ready for Primary 1

When it comes to getting your child ready for Primary 1, here are some tips that will help:

Read books together

Read picture books with your child. The pictures will stimulate their imagination and encourage them to ask questions about what they see. You can also read picture books that talk about school. This will help your child to understand the different things that happen in school.

Sing songs

Singing is fun and it is a great way to bond with your child. When you sing together, you are spending quality time with your child and you are also helping him or her to learn the English language. You can find songs about school on the Internet, or buy CDs that have songs about school on them.

Talk about school

It is important for your child to know what will happen when he or she goes to Primary 1. Talk about how much fun it will be, and how he or she will meet new friends and learn new things in class.

Let your child ask questions and give honest answers so that he or she feels more comfortable about going to school. If you feel it is necessary, ask your doctor for advice on how best to prepare your child for Primary 1 if he or she has anxiety issues.

Have a tour of the primary school

Take a tour of the primary school with your child before his or her first day of class. Talk about what they see and answer any questions they may have so that they feel more comfortable with their new environment when they start school.

Make sure you visit at least two schools before deciding which one you want your child to attend. Because there are many different types of schools out there. Such as international schools, English-medium schools, Chinese-medium schools, Montessori schools, and bilingual schools. Each with its own advantages and disadvantages.

Some parents even choose to send their children overseas for Primary 1. Because they think it is easier for their children’s English skills.

To develop outside Singapore’s education system (see “Choosing an overseas primary school”). You should also consider sending your child overseas if he or she has special needs (see “Your Child Has Special Needs”).
