What are some reasons that make education in Singapore stressful?

1. Schools with high expectations

We’ve all heard of stories of our peers in the same year level achieving much better results than us.

You may also hear that schools like Raffles Institution, St Joseph’s Institution and Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) are so much more academically rigorous than other schools.

While some students from Nanyang Girls High are seen as the top of the top. This makes many students very stressed.

Because they want to perform well in school and make their parents proud. But the truth is, we don’t have to be at the top to make our parents proud.

2. Failing exams

A lot of us will take many important exams such as O levels, PSLE and even post-secondary exams. When we fail an exam, it can be a big blow to our self-esteem and confidence in our abilities, which can make us feel very stressed out.

However, we shouldn’t be afraid of failing because it happens to everyone at some point in their lives. We should remember that everyone fails at something.

What really matters is how we learn from our mistakes and try again until we succeed. Instead of getting frustrated by not getting good results on an exam right away.

Or blaming ourselves for failing it without trying hard enough or putting in enough effort.

This also applies to our studies – if you feel that you’re not learning well or studying hard enough, you can always work harder instead of just blaming yourself for being lazy or useless for not learning quickly enough!

3. Worrying about your future career path

I know this one is really common among Singaporeans – there are a lot of high school students who already know what they want to do when they grow up!

I mean honestly how can someone who’s still in high school know what he/she wants to do for a living? Well I guess there are some people who already have a very clear idea about what they want to do after graduation.

But most people aren’t like that and that doesn’t mean they don’t have any talents or passion for something at all!

But still, a lot of us do have a clear idea about what we want to do and that can make us feel very stressed because it’s hard to imagine how we can achieve our dreams if we don’t know how.

It can also be hard to imagine if you are going to fail your exams or not. This is especially common among people who are studying for their A levels.

Because they are taking their exams when they’re still young and there are so many things that they don’t know yet and can worry about. Such as whether they will get into the university of their choice or not.

I personally think that worrying about the future isn’t worth it because you won’t be able to achieve anything in the present if you keep thinking about what might happen in the future.

If you do want to do something with your life, just take things one step at a time and you will eventually get there.

I know this might sound like an oversimplification. But I think that really helps me stay calm when I start worrying about my future career path!

4. The pressure of having to live up to expectations

I know this sounds like the same thing as “schools with high expectations” but it isn’t quite the same thing.

In this case, I mean family expectations. Such as when parents expect their children to excel academically or in sports or arts, etc.

Or even society’s expectations, like girls being pressured into being skinny or boys being pressured into being athletic. I don’t think anyone has ever been happy when they were expected to live up to someone else’s expectations!

5. The pressure of being successful in life/career (and other stressful things)

This one is pretty self-explanatory. Everyone wants to be successful in life and achieve great things.

I know I’m not the only one who feels this way – we all want to be successful in life and reach our goals, no matter what they are.

But sometimes, when we are so focused on our goals, we can start to feel stressed out because it’s hard to imagine how we can achieve them.

In summary

In conclusion, I think that the best way to deal with stress is to be aware of it and not let it control you. I know this might sound like a cliché.

But the truth is, most of us have been stressed out by something at some point in our lives. Also, we’ve all managed to deal with it!

The main thing is that we shouldn’t be afraid of being stressed out. If you can remember that everyone has been stressed out at some point in their lives.

Then you won’t feel so bad about feeling stressed! If you’re feeling very stressed out, take a break from whatever you are doing – go for a walk or just take a nap. Just remember to breathe and everything will be okay!
