Students should start speaking to a school counsellor once they begin to experience academic, social, or personal challenges that interfere with their school functioning.

For some students, this may mean as soon as they begin to struggle in school. Others may not experience difficulties until later in their high school career.

Why is it important to talk to the school counsellor?

The school counsellor can provide students with a variety of services including:

  • Advising students on ways to improve their school functioning.
  • Connecting students with community resources and supports.
  • Offering support to students who are struggling with stress, anxiety, grief, depression, and other challenges.
  • Exploring and discussing options for coping with difficulties.

Are students the only ones who can see the school counsellor?

No. The school counsellor will work with parents, guardians, teachers, and other professionals who are involved with the student.

How do students make an appointment with the school counsellor?

Students can talk to their teacher, principal, guidance counsellor, or one of the school counsellors to make an appointment.

How will meetings with the school counsellor be conducted?

Meetings with the school counsellor are confidential and students can bring a parent or guardian to the meeting if they wish. The school counsellor can also meet with a student’s teacher or another school staff member if the student wishes.

What else is the school counsellor responsible for?

The school counsellor is also responsible for creating and implementing support systems to help students in school. This is done by working with the school staff and parents/guardians.

What do I do if I have concerns about the school counsellor?

If you have concerns, you can talk to the school counsellor, the student, or the parent/guardian. If you are still concerned, you can also talk to the Principal, or contact the school board.

Who can I contact for more information on the school counsellor?

You can contact the school board, or the school counsellor directly.
