Finding the right tutor for your child

There are two main options when it comes to finding the right for your child. The first is to use a tutor agency. This is a great option if you need a specific subject covered, or if you need help with SAT prep or ACT prep.

Tutor agencies will have pre-screened tutors who are all qualified to teach the subjects they advertise.

The second option is to find an independent tutor through friends, colleagues, or even through sites like Craigslist.

This may seem like a riskier option, but if you find someone who can teach your child well and that your child enjoys working with. Then it’s well worth the time spend on searching for the right person.

Asking questions of potential tutors

When it comes time to interview potential tutors, you should be asking questions about their experience and what they do when working with students.

Do they focus on test preparation? Or do they also help students learn material for class? What sort of methods do they use? Are there any areas in which they specialize?

Do they have any professional certifications? What is their approach when it comes to discipline and behavior issues? How often will your child be expected to work?

How much will this cost per hour? How many hours per week will your child be expected to work with this tutor? What type of references can this tutor provide?

If possible, ask these questions in writing so that you can refer back to them later on.

You want someone who’s not only experienced but someone who has references that can attest to their ability as a teacher and as an educator.

It’s also important that you discuss how your child feels about the person as well as how comfortable he or she feels around them during the interview process.

Don’t just rely on what you think – listen carefully to what your child has to say as well!

Your child needs to feel comfortable around his or her tutor and this feeling of comfort needs to be mutual in order for the relationship between them both work out in the long run.
