Top 5 ways to boost the learning skills of students

1. Help them develop good study habits

2. Ensure that students are working at the right level of difficulty

The level of difficulty is directly related to the quality of feedback given by teachers. You want students to feel successful and engaged in their learning, but also challenged to work at their full potential.

3. Let students have opportunities to practice new skills in a safe environment

A safe environment is one where they can experiment with new skills and strategies. Without the pressure of a test or performance evaluation. These opportunities need to be provided often enough for them. To feel comfortable with using these new skills and strategies as they will be assessed on them later on.

This should happen every time you teach a new skill or strategy and give your students lots of opportunities. To practice before assessments begin so that they are confident using it under stress.

A great way to do this is through class games and cooperative learning activities like Kahoot!™ quizzes which allow students time to practice in a non-threatening environment before being assessed on their knowledge.

By practicing over and over again they will have many more opportunities to master the skill than if they only practiced once or twice just before an assessment occurs, thus making the process more efficient for both you and your students.

4.Give feedback immediately after students have performed a skill or completed an assessment

Giving feedback on the spot will help students understand what they did well and what they need to improve on, and then have the opportunity to practice their skills in a safe environment.

This feedback should be provided by both you and your students so that they can get multiple perspectives.

5.Teach strategies that help students become self-aware learners

Strategies like self-assessment, peer assessment, self-monitoring, and setting personal goals can help them understand their strengths and weaknesses as learners and how to apply this knowledge to their own learning experiences.
